Asbestos Trusts: Leslie Controls Asbestos Trust

In this compelling episode of AC.Law's "Asbestos Trusts" series, we unravel the story of Leslie Controls Company, formerly known as The Leslie Company, a manufacturer established in the early 1900s by John Leslie. Originally focused on creating a steam-powered snow plow for trains, the company evolved into Leslie Controls, Inc., based in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.

Leslie Controls gained renown as a significant supplier of steam control equipment to the U.S. military during World Wars I and II, manufacturing equipment and component parts for steam pressure instruments. However, like many industrial manufacturing companies of its time, Leslie Controls incorporated asbestos into its products due to its exceptional heat-resistant properties. Items such as pipe insulation, packing materials, gaskets, valves, and water heaters produced by the company contained asbestos until the 1980s.

The video delves into the potential risks faced by various trades, including boilermakers, insulators, plumbers, shipyard, and factory workers, due to asbestos exposure from Leslie Controls products. This includes both military veterans and non-veterans, as Leslie Controls valves were used on U.S. Navy ships.

Over time, Leslie Controls faced financial challenges and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, with asbestos litigation playing a significant role in this decision. In 2011, the Leslie Controls Asbestos Personal Injury Trust was established with more than $70 million in funds, providing a channel for claimants to seek compensation. The trust began accepting claims on March 1, 2012.

According to the trust's annual financial report, 3,328 claims were filed in 2022. The report further details that $51,587 was paid to "Category B" claims, covering asbestosis and pleural disease, while $1,752,944 was paid in "Category A" claims, encompassing mesothelioma and cancer, during the same year.

The video highlights that the current payment percentage for claims stands at 5%. The Scheduled Payment Values, designated by the trust as compensation for different types of asbestos injuries, are divided into various categories depending on the type of exposure individuals may have had to Leslie Controls products.
