Asbestos exposure has been proven to cause a number of serious diseases, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. These conditions begin when inhaled asbestos fibers cause physical damage to the lungs and surrounding tissue. The scarring that asbestos causes leaves a unique pattern—one that often shows up on a simple chest x-ray.

Because asbestos-related diseases take decades to develop, anyone exposed today might not show symptoms for 20 to 50 years. That’s why our firm offers free asbestos health tests to anyone who was exposed to asbestos at work or at home before the early 1980s.

Who Qualifies for a Free Test?

We provide free testing for anyone who was exposed to asbestos for five or more years before 1982. Shorter-term exposures may carry less risk, but we always err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.

Asbestos exposure typically happens in one of four ways:

  1. Occupational exposure occurs when a person works in a job that directly exposes him or her to asbestos. One occupation that had very high exposure to asbestos was that of an insulator, and some studies have estimated that over half all insulators would eventually develop an asbestos-related disease. Learn more about occupational exposure to asbestos.

  2. Industrial exposure to asbestos occurs when a person's job doesn't directly cause them to work with asbestos, but asbestos is nonetheless present at a person's job site. For example, many of our clients worked in white collar jobs in refineries and chemical plants. While their direct occupation didn't bring them into exposure to asbestos, everyone on the job site was exposed to asbestos. Learn more about industrial exposure to asbestos.

  3. Product exposure to asbestos occurs when a person works with one or more products made with asbestos. This exposure can happen on the job, such as when an insulator works with asbestos-containing pipe covering, or at home, such as when a person uses asbestos-containing joint compound to do home improvements, or when changing asbestos-containing brakes on a car or truck. Learn more about the kinds of products made with asbestos.

  4. Secondary or take-home exposure occurs when a worker exposed to asbestos brings asbestos home on his or her work clothing and then members of the household breathe the fibers brought home from work. Many of our clients developed an asbestos-related disease from washing a parent's contaminated work clothing. Learn more about secondary exposure to asbestos.

What Does the Test Include?

Our free asbestos health test begins with a simple chest x-ray. Once you've taken your chest x-ray, we will send it to a doctor with experience in "reading" chest x-rays to look for signs of asbestos-related damage to your lungs. But the doctor isn't just looking for asbestos-related conditions.

The doctor will also check for other common and potentially serious lung or heart problems, such as:

  • Pulmonary fibrosis

  • Emphysema or COPD

  • Lung cancer

  • Pleural effusions (fluid buildup)

  • Nodules or masses

  • Pneumonia

  • Tuberculosis (past or present)

  • Calcified granulomas

  • Enlarged heart or signs of heart failure

  • Skeletal issues (rib fractures, scoliosis)

  • Aortic calcification (linked to cardiovascular risk)

💬 We’ve caught life-threatening conditions that had nothing to do with asbestos—some requiring same-day surgery. Of all the things we’re proud of, saving lives through these free health tests ranks highest.

What Happens After Your X-ray?

After the doctor has examined your x-ray, our firm will notify you with the results.

  • If no issues are found, we’ll share the good news and offer to retest you annually.

  • If asbestos damage is found, we’ll schedule an in-person visit with a board-certified pulmonologist who specializes in asbestos diseases.

    • You’ll complete a Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) to assess lung capacity and function.

    • The doctor will also interview you about your exposure history.

If you choose to pursue compensation, their report becomes part of the evidence we use to file claims with asbestos trusts.

🧾 You never pay out-of-pocket. We cover the up-front cost of exams and testing. If we recover compensation, those costs are deducted from your settlement. If we don’t recover anything, you owe nothing.

Common Questions About our Free Asbestos Health Test

Is this test really free? Yes - you are never billed for your x-ray or the doctor's interpretation of it. If your lungs are healthy, we give you the good news and offer to test you again in a year. If your lungs do have asbestos damage and you choose to have us file asbestos trust claims on your behalf, our firm will advance the cost for the in-person examination and pulmonary function test and deduct those costs from your settlements.

Do I really need to have my spouse or children get checked out? They didn't work with asbestos. Believe it or not, we're commonly finding that the children of asbestos workers - whose only exposure to asbestos was from fibers brought into the home on the parent's work clothes - have worse lung function than their asbestos-worker parent. That's likely because children's smaller lungs are more easily damaged by inhaled fibers. So the short answer is YES - you really should have anyone in your household tested who was exposed to asbestos - especially if any exposure was during their childhood.

I'm a smoker, will you still test me? Yes, because cigarette smoking does not cause mesothelioma or asbestosis. Many smokers with asbestos-related lung cancer still qualify for compensation. If you smoked and were exposed to asbestos, it’s especially important to be tested.

I don't want to sue anyone. Will you still test me?

Yes. There’s no obligation to file a lawsuit or trust claim. Our job is to give you clarity—not pressure you. If you want our help, we’re here. If not, we’re still honored to help you understand your health.
