One of the oldest companies as well, JM’s story began in 1858 when Henry Ward Johns started manufacturing roofing shingles in his New York City basement. By 1868, he was awarded a patent for his first asbestos product, and thus began a notorious history of asbestos use. Johns died in 1898 of “dust phthisis pneumonitis,” which is now believed to have been asbestosis.

A Milwaukee pipe insulation company, Manville Covering Company, started selling JM products in the late 1880s and eventually merged with Henry Ward Johns’ company, forming H.W. Johns-Manville Company in approximately 1901.

The newly formed company manufactured an incredible number of asbestos products, from roofing and siding shingles to automotive packing material and brake linings to cement and cement pipes, insulation, and adhesives.

The company was renamed Johns-Manville Corporation in 1926. It was considered the largest manufacturer and distributor of asbestos products in the country.

JM products were used all over U.S. Navy ships starting in the mid-1940s due to World War II.

In the late 1950s, the company expanded its product line again to include fiberglass products with the acquisition of an Ohio-based fiberglass insulation manufacturing company, L.O.F. Glass Fibers.

In 1972, JM moved its headquarters from New York to Denver, Colorado. By this time, it had also been named in the first of what would become hundreds of thousands of asbestos personal injury lawsuits.

Spouses and household members of workers may qualify for the Johns-Manville, LLC Asbestos Personal Injury Trust as well.

People who brought home asbestos on their work clothes may have also been exposed in their homes and vehicles. This especially includes anyone who regularly laundered asbestos-tainted work clothes. Asbestos is dusty and durable, and anyone who spent time in a garage or small laundry room breathing it in could have been at risk.

In 1988, Johns-Manville created the Manville Asbestos Personal Injury Trust under its Chapter 11 Plan of Reorganization. The current payment percentage is 5.1%.

In 2021, 20,722 claims were settled with the Manville Asbestos Personal Injury Settlement Trust, according to its annual financial report.

The report also details that $64,268,975 was paid out in claims in 2021, adding to the more than $5 billion that the Trust has paid since it was established.
