Asbestos was originally used by NASA for its heat-resistant properties on many vehicles and equipment sent into space.

A substance called “vacuum putty” was developed from zinc chromate and asbestos and used on O-rings and other joints to insulate them against the enormous temperatures generated on takeoff and re-entry.

But the National Cancer Institute states that asbestos is a carcinogen and that there is no safe level of asbestos exposure.

Let’s look at exactly what asbestos is and what some of the dangers are that come with it. We will look at Chrysotile, Amosite, Tremolite, Johnson & Johnson baby powder, the Libby, Montana superfund, asbestos ceramics in ancient history, Johns Manville, and much more. Even vestal virgins!

Welcome to Part ONE of our expansive series on asbestos: Asbestos 101.
