From wine bottle corks to linoleum, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, and walls, Armstrong World Industries (AWI) became a leading manufacturer in the construction business over the course of more than 150 years.
AWI, originally named Armstrong Cork Company since it was a producer of wine corks, was founded in 1860 by Thomas Armstrong. It became incorporated in 1891.
In 1907, the company purchased a linoleum factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and further grew its product line and locations.
Through more business success and acquisitions, AWI began incorporating asbestos into its products to keep up with other companies during WWII. Reportedly, the company used asbestos through 1987.
Workers in the construction industry, like laborers, tile-layers, and insulators, were at risk of exposure to the asbestos in AWI products.
Shipbuilders and Navy service members would have been at risk as well due to AWI’s contributions to manufacturing efforts for World War II.
AWI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on December 6, 2000 due to financial losses suffered by ever-increasing asbestos injury litigation.
In 2006, the Armstrong World Industries Asbestos Personal Injury Settlement Trust was created via the company’s Chapter 11 Plan of Reorganization. It was funded with almost $2 billion to start. In 2007 it began accepting claims from injured parties.
In 2021, 14,762 claims were filed with the Trust, according to its annual financial report. Over 300,000 claims have been paid since the trust was founded.
The annual report also details that $84,116,457 was paid out in claims in 2021, adding to the total of $2,849,519,813 the Trust has paid since it was established. The current payment percentage is 19.7%.
